Conical rubber-metal springs are commonly installed in pairs in railway axle housings. They provide controlled stiffness in three directions: vertical, lateral and longitudinal. Their progressive vertical stiffness supports suspension movement under varying loads, while lateral and longitudinal stiffness contribute to vehicle stability and the transmission of braking and traction forces.
Slots or cavities in the rubber element can be used to adjust horizontal stiffness. Depending on the application, the spring design may also incorporate buffers to absorb additional impact loads.
